Tifton, Georgia, founded by sawmill
supervisor Henry Harding Tift, was
incorporated September 29, 1890,
and presently is known as "The Friendly City" in
keeping with its aditional Southern hospitality.
Tifton is also listed in "The 100 Best Small
Towns in America," by best selling author
Norman Crampton, garnering the nomination for
its economic growth, low crime rate, excellent
schools and high percentage of college-educated
residents. Tifton's Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College has recently been named one of the Top
Ten Community
Colleges in America.
Another of Tifton's claim to fame is "Turf Grass
Capital of the World." In addition to providing coverage
for millions of acres of golf courses throughout
the United States, Tifton is home to four scenic golf
courses.
Approximately one hour north of Valdosta, Tifton
is home to The Georgia Agrirama, a living museum
where interpreters share Georgia's rural 19th century
lifestyle. Fully 70% of downtown buildings in Tifton are listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
Public fishing areas, numerous parks
and gardens, and a variety of "u-pick"
farms provide plenty of outdoor family
enjoyment for Tifton's 15,000 residents.
